Events[]
- Enthralled by the Silmaril's splendour, the Dwarves demand the Nauglamír for themselves. Thingol in his anger mocks them terribly, and the Dwarves kill him, stealing the Necklace.[1][2]
- Devastated by Thingol's death, Melian leaves Middle-earth, and her Girdle is withdrawn, leaving Doriath unprotected to its enemies.[1] She ordered Mablung to save the Silmaril and send a message to Beren and Lúthien. The Dwarves are pursued by the Sindar, and all of them are killed, except two dwarves, who make their way back to Nogrod. The Nauglamír and the Silmaril are returned to Menegroth.[2]
- The Dwarves of Nogrod invade Doriath, unleashing a battle in the Thousand Caves.[1] Mablung is killed, the Sindar are scattered, and all the treasures of Menegroth are looted.[2]
- Beren blocks the army of Nogrod on their way to the Blue Mountains. Aided by the Laiquendi and Ents, he defeats the Dwarves at the Battle of Sarn Athrad, slaying their king. He drowns the treasures in Ascar, but takes the Nauglamir for Lúthien to wear it.[1][2]
- Elwing, daughter of Dior and Nimloth, is born in Ossiriand.[1][2]
- Dior removes to Menegroth with his family to rule as new King of Doriath.[1][2]
Spring[]
- Eärendil, son of Tuor and Idril, is born in Gondolin. Sometime afterwards, Idril, fearing about the fate of Gondolin, initiates the construction of a secret way.[1][3]
Autumn[]
- Beren and Lúthien experience Death for the second and final time. Later, Dior receives the Nauglamír from a messenger of the Laiquendi.[1][2]
In other versions[]
In J.R.P.R. Tolkien's original manuscripts, published posthumously by Christopher Tolkien in the eleventh volume of his Histories, the death of Thingol never occurred right after his grievous quarrel with the Dwarves. Instead, Thingol expelled them from his kingdom in disgrace and was killed during the battle at the border of Doriath. Moreover, it were Celegorm and Curufin who intercepted the Dwarven army after the ransack of Menegroth at the Sarn Athrad, but the Sons of Fëanor did not find the Silmaril, since Melian escaped to Ossiriand with the Nauglamír to give it to Lúthien and only then vanished to Valinor in this version.[1] Nevertheless, in his Letter 247 dated September 20 1963, Tolkien apparently returned to the idea that Beren was the conqueror of the Dwarves, aided by the Ents.[4]
