Valandil was a Man of Númenor in the Second Age.
Biography[]
A friend of Isildur and Ontamo, Valandil undergoes the training to become part of Númenor's Sea Guard, as do they. Only a handful of days before the final trials to graduate from cadet status, however, Isildur decides to quit by making an intentional mistake because of his desire to instead further the cause of the Faithful with his brother. Unforeseen by Isildur, the Sail Master dismisses Valandil and Ontamo as well. Valandil is furious with Isildur and in anger renounces him as a friend.
Soon afterwards, Queen Regent Míriel announces a military expedition to the Southlands of Middle-earth, to save its people from Adar and install Halbrand as king. Elendil, appointed as commander of this venture, issues a call for volunteers; Valandil and Ontamo answer the call, as does Isildur. Elendil oversees the volunteers' training, and upon bringing Galadriel for additional teaching, promotes Valandil to lieutenant for scoring a hit on the Elf.
The company sets sail, though not before Valandil grudgingly forgives Isildur. Upon making landfall, the company rides to Tirharad just in time to rescue the survivors from Adar, and quickly defeat the Orcs. While celebrating the victory, however, Orodruin erupts, covering the surrounding lands in ash and fire. Valandil helps some escape the ruins of Tirharad, but witnesses Isildur buried in burning rubble after saving Míriel, and bears the news of his supposed death to his father Elendil. He then assists in escorting Míriel back to the Númenórean camp after learning that she has been blinded by the ash, and thereafter travels with the other survivors back to Númenor; at some point he was accepted back into the Sea Guard.
After Tar-Palantir's death, Míriel's claim to the throne is usurped by Pharazôn, who quickly begins disenfranchising those he deems loyal to Míriel. Valandil is among those made to resign from the Sea Guard. Forced to meet in secret, he attends a ceremony memorializing those who died in Middle-earth, which is discovered by Kemen and a unit of Ar-Pharazôn's guard. Provoked by Kemen, Valandil attacks the prince but is restrained by Elendil from killing him. Immediately, however, Kemen fatally stabs Valandil in the back, and the young man's death is mourned by Elendil.
