This article is about the character in The Lost Road. For the other namesakes, see Valandil (disambiguation). |
Valandil was a Númenórean noblemen and the father of Elendil according to the early version of the legendarium in The Lost Road.
Biography[]
When Herendil informed his father that though the two of them are the blood of kings, his peers called him names such as "Terendul" the day prior, and accused him of being a "half-Noldo",[1] Elendil responded by saying that then it may be dangerous for Herendil to be his son as his own father's name, Valandil, meant "God-friend".[1]
Later. Elendil tells his son that he cannot be corrupted by the servants of Morgoth due to Valandil his father being the "chief of the wise men of Númenor".[1]
Etymology[]
Valandil is a name in Quenya meaning "God-friend", being a compound of vanan ("god") + (-n)dil ("friend"). Oswine was it's Old English cognate.[2]
In other versions[]
In an alternative version, but separate from The Lost Road, Valandil was the son of Amandil and the brother of Elendil the Tall, having the role of Anarion and founding Ondor.[3]
