Valacar was the twentieth King of Gondor and the son of Rómendacil II, whom he succeeded in TA 1366.[1]

Biography[]

Valacar was born in the year 1194 during the Third Age.[2]

Valacar's father, Minalcar, the regent of Gondor, sent Valacar as an ambassador to Vidugavia, a prince of the Northmen who called himself "King of Rhovanion". Minalcar charged Valacar to learn the language, manners and policies of the Northmen. During his stay in Rhovanion, Valacar learned to love the country and the Northmen. With the approval of his father,[3] Valacar married Vidumavi, the daughter of Vidugavia in that time.[4]

In the year 1250,[5] his son Vinitharya was born. Valacar was recalled back to Gondor in the year 1260 by his father to take part in the councils of the realm and the command of its armies.[3] Along with Vidumavi and Vinitharya, Valacar was accompanied by a household of noble men and women from Rhovanion.[3] They were mostly welcomed in Gondor and Valacar gave his son the name Eldacar for public use in Gondor.[3] However, the high men of Gondor disapproved of Valacar's marriage to Vidumavi, who had a shorter lifespan than the Dúnedain because the Northmen were Middle Men. Some conservative Gondorians feared that Eldacar's descendants would also have a short life and weaken the Númenórean blood of the kings. Thus, they did not want to accept Eldacar as their lord. When Valacar grew old, rebellion smoldered in the southern provinces.[4]

Valacar ruled Gondor for sixty-six years, and was succeeded by Eldacar when he died in the year 1432.[1] After Valacar's death, the rebellion turned into a civil war known as the Kin-strife.[6] This conflict lasted for fifteen years, until Eldacar secured the throne.[7]

Etymology[]

Valacar is a name in Quenya that possibly meant "Vala helm"[8] since it is a compound of the word vala ("a Power; angelic power") and -car, the suffixal form of carma ("helm").[9]
