Italicizing the names of extinct animals
Could you give me a link to the Wikia (or Wikipedia) rule that calls for italicizing the names of some extinct animals (like Megaloceros and Tyrannosaurus)? These words may be Latin in origin, but like "Pliocene" they are now English words as well. - Gradivus, 18:31, December 22, 2013 (UTC)
- Greetings! It's not really a Wikipedia rule, nor does it only apply to extinct animals. It's not because the names are Latin either; in taxonomy, the convention is to italicize both the genus and species name (for instance, Homo sapiens). Other classifications, such as phyla, class, and family are not italicized. Don't ask me why this is done, but here's the source! --Stallord's Minion (talk) 22:40, December 22, 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's good to know. - Gradivus, 23:28, December 22, 2013 (UTC)
