"The largest of these collections were probably at Under-towers, at Great Smials, and at Brandy Hall."
The Fellowship of the Ring, "Prologue", "Note on the Shire Records"

Under-towers,[1] or Undertowers, was a settlement of Hobbits in the newly-granted Westmarch province of the Shire.[2]

Under-towers was over one-hundred miles west of Hobbiton, and about fifty miles from Greenholm.[3]

History[]

After the Westmarch was given to the Shire-folk in the year 31 of the Fourth Age by King Elessar as a gift, many Hobbits migrated there, founding the settlement of Under-towers on the slopes of the Tower Hills near the White Towers.[2]

In the year 41, after Thain Peregrin Took, upon Samwise Gamgee's request, made Fastred of Greenholm the Warden of Westmarch, Fastred made a dwelling at Under-towers, where he began living with his wife, Elanor Gardner, and their children: Elfstan Fairbairn and Fíriel Fairbairn. There the family founded the Fairbairns of the Towers, which would dwell at Under-towers for many generations to come.[2]

Under-towers was said to contain one of the largest libraries in the Shire and Buckland alongside Great Smials and Brandy Hall that already "contained many historical books and records" by the beginning of the second century of the Fourth Age. It was here that the Red Book of Westmarch, which Samwise Gamgee gave to Elanor in the year 61,[2] was kept and preserved for a long time afterwards. The library at Under-towers also contained Bilbo Baggins's Translations from the Elvish which was annexed to the Red Book. It was at Under-towers where a fifth volume was added to the Red Book which contained "commentaries, genealogies, and various other matter concerning the hobbit members of the Fellowship".[1]
