This article refers to the district in Hobbiton. For other namesakes, see Underhill (disambiguation).

Under-Hill was a district of Hobbiton which lay before Hobbiton Hill.[1]

History[]

The Underhill family may have derived their name from Under-Hill, as they were said to have many branches in both the Shire and Bree.

In the late Third Age, Bungo Baggins built a significant Hobbit-hole upon Hobbiton Hill in Under-Hill. He named this hole Bag End, and it became the most famous hole in Under-Hill. Later, Bilbo Baggins would refer to his address as "Bag-End, Under-Hill", "Bag-End Under-Hill",[2] or just "Bag End".[1][3]

Due to Bilbo's supposed disappearance to go on the Quest of Erebor, he was "Presumed Dead" and it was decided by Messrs Grubb, Grubb, and Burrowes that his estate was to be auctioned off in a Sale on June 22 under the address of "Bilbo Baggins Esquire, of Bag-End, Underhill, Hobbiton".[4]
