Tolkien scholars are those who study J.R.R. Tolkien's personal life, legendarium, or academic work, and write Tolkien scholarship concerning them with academic-level analysis, drawing on their own expertise. Written Tolkien scholarship is the majority of secondary literature.
Tolkien scholarship converges frequently, in Tolkien Studies, Journal of Tolkien Research, Mythlore, the Cormarë Series, numerous independent essay collections, and large collaborations such as Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth (2018), J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia (2006), and A Companion to J.R.R. Tolkien (2022).
