Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth, by Tolkien archivist Catherine McIlwaine, is a book of the material shown in a 2018 Bodleian Library exhibit, "Maker of Middle-earth", in Oxford, England. Such material includes manuscripts and photos of J.R.R. Tolkien, and hundreds of illustrations by him, disclosed for the first time. The book serves as a tour of Tolkien's life, following six essays by preeminent Tolkien scholars.
As an exhibition catalog, this book and its shorter companion, Tolkien: Treasures, were distantly preceded by Tolkien: Life and Legend, from a 1992 Bodleian exhibition.
- "For anyone who grew up in the Tolkien universe, seeing the original artwork—the death of Smaug, for instance, the dragon’s head thrown back, his scales pierced by a black arrow, over the burning remains of the lake town of Esgaroth—will be like meeting an old friend."
- —Country Life
The book was voted Best Book of 2019 by the British Tolkien Society.[1]
