Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth, by Tolkien archivist Catherine McIlwaine, is a book of the material shown in a 2018 Bodleian Library exhibit, "Maker of Middle-earth", in Oxford, England. Such material includes manuscripts and photos of J.R.R. Tolkien, and hundreds of illustrations by him, disclosed for the first time. The book serves as a tour of Tolkien's life, following six essays by preeminent Tolkien scholars.

As an exhibition catalog, this book and its shorter companion, Tolkien: Treasures, were distantly preceded by Tolkien: Life and Legend, from a 1992 Bodleian exhibition.

"For anyone who grew up in the Tolkien universe, seeing the original artwork—the death of Smaug, for instance, the dragon’s head thrown back, his scales pierced by a black arrow, over the burning remains of the lake town of Esgaroth—will be like meeting an old friend."
Country Life

The book was voted Best Book of 2019 by the British Tolkien Society.[1]
