Tolkien's Theology of Beauty: Majesty, Splendor, and Transcendence in Middle-earth is a book by American scholar Lisa Coutras, published in 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan.
Coutras assesses the underpinnings of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, using frequently the idea of transcendental beauty conceived by Christian theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, and channeling thoughts and interpretations of many Tolkien scholars such as Verlyn Flieger, Tom Shippey, and John Garth.
In a section "On Women", rebuttals are offered to the notion that Tolkien portrayed women poorly in his stories; particularly, criticisms by Candice Fredrick and Sam McBride[1] made in 2001. Another section gives a framework of "tragic heroism" in literature, proposing what narrative purposes Tolkien had behind Túrin Turambar's suicide in The Children of Húrin.
