Tol Withernon was an island off the east coast of Tol Eressëa,[1] in earlier versions of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium.[2]
It might have been in the westernmost cape of the Twilit Isles, where the Tower of Pearl was located.[3][4]
Etymology[]
Tol Withernon is a Gnomish name with an untold meaning containing the words tol ("island; high steep-sided isle")[5] and withernon.[6][7]
Inspiration[]
Tol Withernon might have been inspired by the town of Withernsea in Yorkshire; Tolkien was stationed not far away from the town during World War I. In fact, a local tradition claims that before to become landlocked, the town was actually located on an island.[1]
