The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen takes place in the Third Age of Middle-earth. It tells the story of the love of the mortal Man, Aragorn and the immortal Half-elf, Arwen, daughter of Elrond.
The tale was written by Faramir's grandson Barahir after Aragorn's death.[1] An excerpt of it is included in Appendix A of The Lord of the Rings.
Summary[]
Aragorn was the son of Arathorn II, the chieftain of the Dúnedain, and his wife Gilraen. After his father was killed battling Orcs, Gilraen took her two-year-old son Aragorn to live in Rivendell. Elrond accepted the boy as a foster-son and gave him the name Estel to conceal his identity as Heir of Isildur.
Around his twentieth year, just after he had been informed of his real name and heritage, Aragorn witnessed in a forest the beauty of Arwen for the first time, clad in a mantle of silver and blue. Mistaking her for Lúthien, he called to her by that name, and loved only her from then onward. Gilraen warned Aragorn of the folly of his love for Arwen, being a high-born Elf. Seeing their love, Elrond warned Aragorn that a great doom awaited him; to rise higher than any of his forebears since Elendil, or to fall into darkness with the rest of his kin. Therefore he warned Aragorn to bind no woman to him in troth, but Aragorn responded with the foresight that Elrond's own time in Middle-earth was ending and Arwen would soon have to make her choice; stay in Middle-earth as a mortal woman or depart to Aman to live as long as the world endured. Aragorn left Rivendell and was abroad for thirty years, becoming a Ranger and a determined opponent of Sauron.
In his forty-ninth year (TA 2980), after years of strife and toil, Aragorn wished once again to be at peace. He came into Lórien, not knowing that Arwen also was there. "And thus it was that Arwen first beheld him again after their long parting; and as he came walking towards her under the trees of Caras Galadhon laden with flowers of gold, her choice was made and her doom appointed." On Cerin Amroth, in the midst of Lórien, they plighted their troth looking toward the shadow of the east and the twilight of the west, and stayed together for a season.
However, Elrond soon knew of what had happened and told Aragorn that his daughter would be married to no less a person than the King of Gondor and Arnor. Ultimately Aragorn would have to wait thirty nine years and pass through many perils including the Quest of the Ring before he was finally crowned. Arwen arrived in Minas Tirith in midsummer of TA 3019 and the new White Tree of Gondor flowered to mark their union.
After the War of the Ring, Arwen and Aragorn were married and spent six-score years in bliss. As Aragorn felt his life drawing to a close, he came to Arwen, saying, "In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! We are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory." After his death, she bid farewell to Eldarion and her daughters, and went out of Minas Tirith to Lórien and, "dwelt there alone under the fading trees until winter came." Sometime before the Spring in FO 121, she passed away on Cerin Amroth.[2]
