This article is about the History of Middle-earth chapter. For the section of The Silmarillion, see Quenta Silmarillion.

The Quenta is the third chapter of The Shaping of Middle-earth.

Synopsis[]

The chapter summarizes an earlier version of The Silmarillion, and is divided into nineteen subsections. Each subsection has a commentary counterpart, written by Christopher Tolkien.

Then that is followed by two appendixes. Appendix one is a translation of a fragment of the chapter into Old English, along with the translations of Elvish names into Old English, supposedly made by Ælfwine. Appendix two is a poem that exists in three versions, called The Horns of Ylmir from 'The Fall of Gondolin'.
