The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a video game based on events set during the timeline of The Lord of the Rings.
Plot[]
The game is based solely on J.R.R. Tolkien's book trilogy. It focuses on Gollum, covering his activities from the finding of the One Ring[2] to the timeframe of the early chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring.[3] Gollum's persona is split between his Gollum self (vicious, villainous) and Sméagol (social, cautious).[3]
Various characters are encountered, including some unique to the game itself.[4]
Gameplay[]
The game revolves around stealth. Player choice factors into the game, in a system based on choosing between the "Smeagol decision" and the "Gollum decision."[2] The former tends to be more honorable, while the latter is "darker."[3]
Gollum is able to climb walls and attack enemies from above, but is poorly suited for direct combat.[4]
Development[]
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is the first game produced under a deal struck by Daedalic Entertainment and Middle-earth Enterprises. Daedalic was able to secure the deal as, according to Daedalic, "it was clear that the Tolkien Estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years."[2]
On January 6, 2020, senior producer Kai Fiebig revealed that Gollum's character design will not resemble that from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies.[5] Gollum was chosen to be the team's own interpretation of the character. Gollum is voiced by Wayne Forester.[3]
Art director Mathias Fischer has noted that the story will include a number of the "less cool", or less popular, Nazgûl.[5]
On May 4, 2020, it was reported that the game will be released for Xbox Series X, PC, and PS5. A number of in-game screenshots were revealed.[6]
Passing its original September 2nd release date, the company said that it was delayed "for a few months", and was ultimately rescheduled for May 25, 2023.
