The Lion Is Loud and Proud is the name of a short[1] and curious[1] poem written by J.R.R. Tolkien.[2]
Poem excerpt[]
The Lion is loud and proud, and Strong —
is loud and proud, I said —[1]
Background[]
The poem was written around 1924 and features two voices arguing about the titular Lion. The second line was originally written as "is loud and proud, is what I said", but Tolkien rejected this for the current second line.[1]
Tolkien likely may have given the poem's only manuscript to E.V. Gordon, because the manuscript currently resides in the Gordon archive at the University of Leeds.[1]
