The Hobbit: An Illustrated Edition of the Fantasy Classic was an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit by comic book writer Chuck Dixon and Sean Deming, and initially published twice: by Ballantine Books in 1990, and then as a new edition by Del Rey in May 2001. It differs from most other Illustrated editions of Tolkien's works in that it is in graphic novel form.
It features illustrations by David T. Wenzel and Donato Giancola, and followed Wenzel's own comic book adaptation of The Hobbit, released in 1989 by Eclipse Comics.
Possibly to clear up confusion with other illustrated editions (which are usually not graphic novels) of Tolkien's works, the 2024 re-release by William Morrow Paperbacks got a new cover with the title "The Hobbit: A Graphic Novel".
