Page 2 of the Chronology, covering October, TA 3018, through January, 3019

The Chronology of The Lord of the Rings is a 14-page timeline of the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, finished by Tolkien in the 1940s and used while he wrote the novel. It was featured in a special addition to Tolkien Studies, vol. 19 (July 2022), edited by William Cloud Hicklin.

It is notable for including small details excluded from the published story, such as Gollum's brief capture by Uglúk and the demise of Shagrat in Mordor.

Contents[]

Tolkien organized most of the chronology with rows standing for days and columns for each character or group.

Hicklin's article features an introduction by himself, David Bratman, and others. In fifty pages, the chronology is presented with Hicklin's commentary. Further commentary, on the development of the chronology, follows this.
