General Targg was a Dunlending military commander during the War between Rohan and Dunland.

Biography

General Targg was a long serving and trusted advisor of Freca and later his son Wulf. He is skilled in the ways of strategy and warfare. He shares his liege's disdain for the Rohirrim under the rule of Helm Hammerhand and a ruthless commander and a fearsome fighter.

Targg is part of Freca's delegation to Edoras to seek an alliance through marriage of Wulf and Helm's daughter, which was rebuffed. He is present when Freca was killed by Helm soon afterwards. He leaves Edoras with Wulf who was banished from Rohan by Helm.

Years later, he is a lieutenant of Wulf's during his retaliatory war against Rohan. Targg is a calm and unflappable leader who tempers the rash and impulsive Wulf. He helps organise the hill tribes behind Wulf as well as acquire allies from among the Southrons, Variags and the Wold.

After Helm's daughter and Fréaláf Hildeson discover the corpse of a Southron and a feral Mûmakil, Targg captures her. He brings her back to Isengard, but she is rescued by Fréaláf and Olwyn. Soon after Targg accompanies Wulf in his attack on Edoras.

During the Siege of the Hornburg he, rather than Wulf, keeps the men on task though he begins to question Wulf's leadership. This became evident after Wulf knowingly lies to his troops promising rewards for taking the Hornburg, despite Targg reminding Wulf that the fortress had never been used as a treasure hold. When Wulf faces Helm's daughter in combat Targg turns away from Wulf thinking him a coward and a liar. Incensed, Wulf pulls a knife and stabs Targg in the gut killing him.
