How Exactly Do You Pronounce Maedhros?[]
Many of the elvish names have a tricky pronunciation, but the one I found the hardest was definently Maedhros. In the 'Note on Pronounciation', it is said that 'dh' is pronounced as a soft 'th' and 'ae' is not to be run together. So, I've heard many people pronounce it 'Maid-rows, but that is incorrect. However what actually is correct? From what I can tell, the closest I can get is'My-eth-rohs' [with the 'e' as in 'e'gg or 'E'lendil] or 'May-eth-rohs' [with the 'e' as in 'e'ager or 'e'gret.] Please edit this or correct me if I'm wrong, because neither Sindarin or Quenya are my first language.
- In Appendix E of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien writes that "ae" is pronounced as a diphthong (as in Latin) in Sindarin, so the pronunciation of Maedhros (being of Sindarin origin) would be approximately "MAY-thross" (rhyming with floss). Using the Quenya pronunciation it would sound almost the same, except with the first syllable slightly split into two with the two letters of the diphthong pronounced separately (very tiny pause between them), but otherwise the same (as in the Latin), so it would be something like "MA-e-thross" or "ma-AY-thross."

- I've recorded my best guess as to the (primary) Sindarin and (secondary) Quenya pronunciations of the name Maedhros, at this link.
