Tal-Elmar was a man of Agar, and the main protagonist of the homonymous tale.
History[]
Tal-Elmar was the seventeenth and youngest son of Hazad Longbeard. Much like his grandmother, Elmar, he was tall and slender, fair-skinned with light hair. Unlike his kin, he was not prone to anger without reason, but he gained the nickname "Flint-eye" for his fierce gaze when angry. He was devoted to his father, and thus was Hazad's favorite son.[1]
On a morning in spring, he spotted four Númenórean ships from a hill, and went with his father to warn the town-master Mogru about the intruders. The town-master mocked Tal-Elmar and his father and because he did not see such ships. Hoping to endanger him, Mogru sent Tal-Elmar as a scout, just as he had done a year prior in the nearby town of Udul. Tal-Elmar reached the coast and, after a moment of hesitation, met the Númenóreans, who captured him. The captain interrogated Tal-Elmar, who had fortunately learned the answers which the captain desired in "long dreams". Thus, the captain revealed to Tal-Elmar the Númenóreans' intention to occupy the lands and slay any who would oppose them.[1]
