This article is about the Steward of Gondor. For the other namsakes, see Turin (disambiguation).

Túrin II was the twenty-third Ruling Steward of Gondor.[2]

Biography

Born in TA 2815, Túrin II was the son of Thorondir, who died in TA 2882. Túrin then succeeded him as the twenty-third Ruling Steward.[2]

In TA 2885 Túrin fought the Haradrim at the Crossings of Poros in South Ithilien with the aid of a contingent of Rohirrim led by Prince Folcred and Prince Fastred the twin sons of King Folcwine. The Haradrim were defeated but, in the course of the battle both Prince Folcred and Fastred were slain. After the victory Túrin paid King Folcwine a great weregild of gold.[2]

During the stewardship of Túrin II, Ithilien was attacked again by Mordor and many of the inhabitants withdrew west over the Anduin with only the hardiest of individuals remaining. Ithilien became a wilderness infested by Orcs from Mordor. In North Ithilien the Men of Gondor reestablished the hidden fortress of Henneth Annûn and the Men of Gondor fortified the isle of Cair Andros.[2]

Túrin died in TA 2914 at the age of ninety-nine after a rule of thirty-two years and was succeeded by his son Turgon.[2]

Etymology

Túrin comes from the Sindarin word tur ("power, mastery").[3][4] He might have been named after the tragic hero of the First Age, Túrin Turambar.
