The Southlinch was a region of hill fields that were located on the southern side of Bree-hill in Bree-land,[1] which was located not far from The Shire in Eriador.[citation needed]

History[]

The best brand of pipe-weed in Bree[2] was named after the Southlinch,[1] which, according to Barliman Butterbur, paled in comparison to the pipe-weed commonly found within the Southfarthing of The Shire.[2]

In TA 3019, on the journey back to The Shire, the Hobbits and Gandalf were given "a wad of uncut leaf" from the Southlinch by Butterbur.[2]

Etymology[]

As the old word linch refers to a terrace, it is very likely that these fields were divided into ridges for the growing of Pipe-weed.[citation needed]

In adaptations[]

In the video game, The Lord of the Rings Online, The Southlinch is not named, but a group of hill fields are able to be visited on the south side of the Bree-hill.
