The South Downs were a series of hills in Eriador just south of Bree.[1][2]
During the Wandering Days of the Hobbits, the first clan to migrate was of the small, hill-dwelling Harfoots, who traveled as far west as the South Downs, living there for centuries and establishing numerous villages. Later, when the tall, forest-dwelling Fallohides traveled to the South Downs, the Harfoots intermingled with them, becoming their followers, and settled further northwest in the Bree-land.
