The Siege of Osgiliath occurred in the year TA 1437,[1] as part of the civil war known as the Kin-strife of Gondor.

History[]

Following the succession of Valacar by his son Eldacar, much of Gondor's population revolted against the new king due to his foreign heritage. Led by the usurper Castamir, they besieged Eldacar in the capital, Osgiliath. Eldacar held out for quite some time, until the forces loyal to him began to suffer from hunger, and the numbers of the rebels proved too great. The city was set on fire, destroying the Dome of Stars along with many other structures. Additionally, the palantír of Osgiliath was lost in the Anduin as a result of the Dome of Stars' destruction.

Aftermath[]

Despite Eldacar's defeat, he eluded his enemies and made his way to Rhovanion, where he stayed for a time with his kinsfolk and planned the retaking of his kingdom. Eldacar's son Ornendil, however, was captured and cruelly put to death by Castamir. Eldacar would succeed in regaining rule of Gondor a decade later, although much life was lost as a result.[2]
