The Siege of Eregion was a deadly battle between Sauron and the Elves of Eregion during the Second Age, marking the beginning of the War of the Elves and Sauron.
History[]
The Lord of Eregion, Celebrimbor, supervised the defense of the borders of his land as he realized that Sauron was taking the route to the Fords of Isen. The High King Gil-galad sent Elrond to help Celebrimbor defend Eregion from Sauron. Elrond marched at the head of a small army, intending to confront Sauron at Ost-in-Edhil. But he arrived too late, as the city was already in ruins. When the army arrived they were surprised at the fall of the city, and shocked by the death of Celebrimbor at the hands of Sauron. As such, they were quickly defeated by Sauron's forces. Elrond managed to retreat and build a fortress in a valley of the Misty Mountains called Rivendell.
In adaptations[]
In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power[]
In the The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two, the armies of the "Mordor" orcs are instead lead by Adar, not Sauron who was still in his Annatar form in Ost-in-Edhil. The armies of Adar dams the Glanduin and the Elves prepare for attack. The Orcs march over the drained river and begin to break the wall with Ravagers. At the same time, Celebrimbor discovers Annatar's true identity and escapes his tower. He gives the rings of men to Galadriel and pursues Sauron himself in his tower, with the help of some of his guards. Celebrimbor and his guards are all slain by Sauron in the tower, and Galadriel flees with the remaining Elves north but is pursued and captured by Orcs. Galadriel turns herself in to save the Elves and the Orcs take her to Adar. However this was a trap for both Galadriel and Adar, as Sauron has gained the loyalty of Glug, Adar's right-hand man, and the troops who follow Glug- resulting in Adar and Galadriel, when a "dying" Glug is taken to them, not suspecting anything. Glug and the Orcs who follow him kill Adar, and Galadriel and Sauron battle on the hill above Ost-in-Edhil. At the same time the Dwarves arrive to aid the Elves, including Narvi. But the Orcs are too many, and in the end Eregion is lost, and Sauron takes the rings of men. The Orcs are sent back into battle by Sauron despite the concerns of Glug — whom Sauron stabs through the throat, killing him slowly- resulting in, as Glug feared, many Orcs dying in pursuit. With the aid of the Dwarves, who hold back the Orcs, the Elves, including the likes of Elrond, Gil-galad, Galadriel, and Arondir, flee to the valley of Imladris, and begin to found the refuge of Rivendell.
