"Sellic Spell" is a work by J.R.R. Tolkien published in Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary. The author described it as "an attempt to reconstruct the Anglo-Saxon tale that lies behind the folk-tale element in Beowulf."
Tolkien began work on Sellic Spell in the 1940s; he made several manuscripts, and produced one version translated into Old English.
The title of the work is derived from Old English syllíc spell ("strange tale").[1]
