Seas were relatively large bodies of water in Arda.
History[]
When Arda was unmarred there were no seas and the only large body of water was the Great Lake.[1] After the destruction of the Two Lamps, the Western Sea and the Eastern Sea were formed, along with the Sea of Helcar and the Sea of Ringil.[1] The War of the Powers caused the formation of the Inner Seas,[2] while during the First Age formed the Sea of Rhûn. After the War of Wrath appeared also the Sea of Núrnen.[3]

Other versions[]
In earlier versions of the legendarium, in the Great Lands existed an Inland Sea, called Wendelsæ in Old English, that paralleled the Mediterranean Sea.[4] In fact, J.R.R. Tolkien originally had intended his legendarium to bear a proper British mythology, wherefore he drew from actual history for many of his early stories.
