Armies of Sauron

Sauron's battalions at the Black Gate

The Morgul-host[1] was the vast army of the Dark Lord Sauron. It was mustered at instances over three millennia from the forces of Mordor's vassal lands in both the Second and Third Ages. The Morgul-host's purpose was to rid Sauron of his mortal enemies in the West, specifically Men and their Elven allies, and impose his dominion over Middle-earth.

Description & history

The Morgul-host consisted mostly of Orcs, as well as TrollsHalf-trolls of Far Harad, Uruks of Mordor, Werewolves, Nazgûl and other foul things. The Dark Lord also drew nations of Men to his allegiance: the Haradrim, Black Númenóreans, Variags of Khand, and Easterlings of Rhûn. Animals in the Morgul-host included Wargs used as mounts for Orcs, Mûmakil as creatures of war for the Haradrim, Black Wings as mounts for Nazgûl when they had lost their horses, and great siege beasts, used as beasts of burden. They also had naval support from the Corsairs of Umbar.

Because the Morgul-host was so large, there were many commanders of its divisions. The Witch-king was its chief captain, while the Mouth of Sauron, Gothmog, and Grishnákh would have had varying sway over it as well.

The Morgul-host first substantially fought against the Last Alliance of Elves and Men at the Battle of Dagorlad and Siege of Barad-dûr. Assembled once more at the end of the Third Age, they again fought throughout the War of the Ring. Notable battles in the later War of the Ring were the Battle of Osgiliath, Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and Battle of the Black Gate.

There were many symbols for different divisions of the Morgul-host: Minas Morgul's Orcs had the symbol of a wicked crescent moon, while Orcs of Cirith Ungol and Barad-dûr, and presumably elsewhere in Mordor, bore the red Eye of Sauron. The Haradrim bore a standard of a black serpent on a scarlet field.

Although the Morgul-host was massive, the army had one major weakness due to the dark lord's corruption and evil, his army often had infighting within its ranks, usually due to orcs fighting each other or fighting other members of the Morgul-host.
