Saruman's legions as viewed from above

Saruman's Army was a massive army of more than 10,000 soldiers sent from Isengard by Saruman to conquer Rohan and later defend Isengard from being attack by Treebeard and Ents.

Description and History

The army of Saruman consisted of Uruk-hai and also contained some wild men from Dunland. There was also quite a few Half-orcs. Their primary symbol was a white hand, or named the Hand of Saruman.

The army had siege ladders and the Fire of Orthanc. Saruman used this army to attack the people of Rohan, most notably at the Battle of the Hornburg. They also fought at the Battles of the Fords of Isen, and a small band fought at the Skirmish at Amon Hen, though this group was destroyed by the Riders of Rohan at The Wold on the outskirts of Fangorn forest.

A small portion of the army stayed at Isengard and fought at the Battle of Isengard. The army was utterly defeated and completely destroyed by the Ents led by Treebeard, Pippin and Merry save for an unknown number of Dunlendings who surrendered to the victors.

At the first Battle at the Fords of Isen, thousands of Uruk-hai and Orc-men attacked Theodred and his company, killing Theodred.

Portrayal in Adaptations

In the The Two Towers (film), the culvert of the Hornburg was breached by a movie-only group of Uruks known as Berserkers where one rushed forth with an explosive in hand unstopped by an wave of arrows that pierced him, threw himself into it and breached it. The Uruk-hai were shown using Crossbows, which were never mentioned as being used in the books. The Fire of Orthanc is there portrayed as gunpowder-like explosives. There is also a sequence where an orc named Sharku, accompanied by Warg-riders, attack the people of Rohan on their way to Helms Deep.
