A river troll in LOTRO

River Trolls actually appear in one of J.R.R Tolkeins books. They appear in chapter ten of The Hobbit, page 237 line 28 where it says, "ocasional squables about river-trolls," as the dwarves entered lake town. They were origanly thought to be an invention of The Lord of the Rings Online. In that game, they are said to live in the Ettenmoors, especially in the autumn or wet season near rivers, lakes and springs. These trolls are extremely rare and aggressive, though an elven adventurer from Mirkwood called Galaril has been reported as the only person to have found and slain one. These trolls tend to use boulders and rocks as weapons though they also use maces and spears, which when used by these creatures are challenging in combat.

These trolls have strangely enough only one eye, which is brownish-grey in colour, they are 8 to 9 feet tall and their skin is thick and almost impenetrable, it is green-brown to grey in colour. River trolls are very proficient at swimming and they prey on large fish around 4 to 5 feet long, though they do eat passing travelers and deer. When these trolls have found a good hidden habitat (which usually will be near rivers) they will build a sturdy dam and block some water off, then they will dig a great tunneling system in the side of the river and make their home.

When Galaril killed one of these trolls he returned to Mirkwood, with one of the trolls 10 inch long fangs to prove to his fellow elves and family that he slayed the rare River Troll.
