Regent,[1] also called Karma-kundo, Lieutenant of the King, or Crown-lieutenant, was a position in Númenor[2] and a title in Gondor.[3]
History[]
During the voyages of Tar-Aldarion, the Council of the Sceptre established a regency. After Meneldur refused to take up the position, the regency was offered and taken by Hallatan of Hyarastorni. It is told that Ancalimë took up the position on a few occasions.[2]
In the year 1240 of the Third Age, Narmacil I, the seventeenth King of Gondor, sought to rid himself of all the burdens of state, appointing his young brother Calmacil's son, Minalcar, to be Regent. Minalcar exercised all the affairs of state and effectively ruled in Narmacil's name. When Narmacil died, Minalcar continued to rule the realm throughout Calmacil's decade long reign. Minalcar ruled as Regent for sixty-four years from TA 1240 to TA 1304. He was the only known holder of the title in the history of Gondor and would go on to ascend to the throne of Gondor after his father's death in 1304, taking the name Rómendacil II and ruling for a further sixty-two years.[3]
In the year 1944, after the thirty-first King of Gondor, Ondoher, was killed by the Wainriders along with his sons, the Steward, Pelendur, briefly ruled Gondor as Regent until Eärnil I was appointed and crowned as the king in 1945.[4]
Etymology[]
Karma-kundo was a Quenya name that meant "Helm-guardian".[3]
