Rómendacil I was the eighth King of Gondor.
Biography[]
Rómendacil, initially named Tarostar, was the son of King Ostoher. When the Easterlings invaded in TA 490, Tarostar as crown-prince was charged with leading the defence against them, as Ostoher was too old. He succeeded his father upon his death in TA 492. Tarostar defeated the Easterlings, after many battles, by TA 500. After the victory he renamed himself Rómendacil, meaning "East-victor".
It was he that created the office of the Steward of Gondor, as a high councillor to the king.[3] When the line of kings failed two thousand years later, the holders of this office would rule Gondor.
The peace on Gondor's frontiers was not to last forever: forty years later in TA 541 the Easterlings invaded once more, and Rómendacil rode to meet them in battle, but was slain.
He was succeeded by his son Turambar.[1]
Etymology[]
The name Rómendacil was Quenya, meaning 'East-victor', and his birth name Tarostar was also Quenya, meaning 'Royal-fortress'.
