Paul Lasaine in the 2010s

Paul Lasaine is an American concept artist and illustrator.

With Jeremy Bennett, he served as a VFX Art Director in the making of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Ringstrilogy starting in 1999. In pre-production, he made matte paintings of numerous scenes and locations, such as a full glimpse of the illuminated Glittering Caves seen in The Two Towers (2002), many of which are displayed in Gary Russell's books on the art behind the films.[1][2][3] Lasaine and Bennett's tasks, primarily pre-visualizational, were outside those of the Wētā Digital VFX artists.

Before working on the trilogy, Lasaine served as matte painter or supervisor for dozens of films, since 1988 with Ernest Saves Christmas. He was a background-art supervisor for the acclaimed Prince of Egypt (1998).

After the success of The Lord of the Rings, he became visual development artist for feature animated films such as Shark Tale (2004) and, most recently, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
