Of Aulë and Yavanna is the second chapter of the Quenta Silmarillion which is the third part of The Silmarillion.

Synopsis

In the darkness of Middle-earth, Aulë created the Dwarves in his impatience for the arrival of the Children of Ilúvatar. He hoped to teach his skills and lore to them, and thus made the seven Fathers of the Dwarves. Fearing that the other Valar might blame his work, Aulë worked under the mountains of Middle-earth. The secret was discovered by Ilúvatar, and he spoke to Aulë of his disapproval. Therefore, Aulë decided to smite his creation and wept. And the Dwarves shrank in fear of Aulë's hammer, and Ilúvatar was moved to pity. However, Ilúvatar declared that the Dwarves should sleep until the Firstborn of his Children should arrive.

Aulë was known to the Dwarves as "Mahal" and they believed that their existence was to aid Aulë in the remaking of Arda after the Last Battle.

Though first wrought in secret, Aulë opened up to his wife Yavanna about his creations. But she worried about her own creations: the plants and trees that she had sown could be loved little by Aulë's Dwarves. Therefore, she went to seek counsel from Manwë and ask for protection of her creations. When asked about which to protect, Yavanna answered that all have their worth; but she requested that the trees should punish those who would wrong them. And Manwë sat in silence for a long while.

Yavanna recalled the Music of the Ainur, then, and a strain of music in which some of the trees lifted their branches and sang to Ilúvatar.

It was then said that, when the Firstborn (Elves) awoke, spirits also would come down into certain of the plants and animals in the form of the Great Eagles and the Shepherds of the Trees (Ents). Aulë and Yavanna, however, and the "children" of each, would often be in conflict in the ages to come.
