The Northfarthing located on a map of the Shire
The Northfarthing (or North Farthing) was the least populated of the four Farthings of the Shire.
It was the only Farthing that did not meet at the Three Farthing Stone, as its southern point ended around eleven miles north of it.
The Northfarthing had a colder climate then the rest of the Shire, and was the only place where heavy snowfall was common.
The soil tended to be rocky, and settlements here were delved or made from its stones. It was still good enough to farm and was where the Shire's barley for their beer came from.
It also had fresh and fragrant air. When Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee passed through Ithilien for the first time, the air in that region reminded them of the Northfarthing.
According to the The Atlas of Middle-earth, the region appeared to be the second largest farthing in the Shire and at its widest about 100 miles across.[1]
Places of interest[]
- The town of Long Cleeve was the home of a small part of the Took-clan known as the North-tooks, descendants of Bandobras Took, who settled here after the Battle of the Green Fields. This reference to the north was because most Tooks dwelt within the Westfarthing.
- The village of Hardbottle was the home to the Bracegirdle family of Hobbits, to whom Lobelia Sackville-Baggins belonged. Some maps erroneously place Hardbottle in the Southfarthing.
- The Green Fields was the site of the most notable historic event in the Northfarthing, the Battle of the Green Fields. This was one of the few battles that occurred within the Shire's boundaries before the Battle of Bywater.
- the town or village of Oatbarton was connected to the East-West Road through the Northway.
- Along the northern border was the high treeless upland called the North Moors.
- Other geographic features were the Bindbole Wood and the Norbourn river.
