"Do you not know, Boromir, or do you choose to forget the North Stair, and the high seat upon Amon Hen, that were made in the days of the great kings?"
Aragorn, to Boromir in The Fellowship of the Ring

The North Stair was a stairway situated alongside the Falls of Rauros in the North March of Gondor.

Description and history[]

The stair was built "in the days of the great kings" of Men, likely in the early Third Age under the direction of the Kings of Gondor. It was used as a means to bypass the Falls of Rauros traveling along the Anduin, either to or from Nen Hithoel and the lands surrounding.[1]

In the year TA 3019, prior to the Fellowship of the Ring's attempt to navigate the Rapids of Sarn Gebir, Aragorn reminded Boromir of the Stair's significance while discussing which route should be taken. The Fellowship was broken shortly afterwards, however, and this path was not used.[2]
