Neil D. Isaacs, Ph. D. (born August 1931 in New York) is an American novelist, social worker, and retired Professor of English language and literature (1971 to 2000) at the University of Maryland, who has authored three compilations on Tolkien scholarship and criticism with Rose A. Zimbardo. Their first work, Tolkien and the Critics (1968), was a pioneer of "secondary literature" on J.R.R. Tolkien.
He received his doctorate in Philosophy in English Language and Literature from Brown University, Rhode Island in 1959.
