"the necklace of Girion, Lord of Dale, made of five hundred emeralds green as grass"
J.R.R. Tolkien in The Hobbit, "Inside Information"

The necklace of Girion was a very great necklace made out of five hundred green emeralds. It originally belonged to Girion, the Lord of Dale.[1]

History[]

It is possible that the necklace of Girion was made by the Men of Dale.[citation needed]

Sometime before the Sack of Erebor, Girion wanted the Dwarves of Erebor to give him a one of a kind coat made of pure silver dwarf-linked rings which was to be as strong and powerful as triple steel. The Dwarves did as he requested and Girion armed his eldest son with it. In return for the unique coat, Girion gave the Dwarves a necklace which was studded with five hundred emeralds as green as grass.[1]

In the year 2770 of the late Third Age, the Dragon Smaug took over Erebor and destroyed Dale.[2] After his takeover, Smaug added the necklace along with everything else into a hoard in the Great Hall of Thráin.[1]

Near the end of the Quest of Erebor, on the doorstep of the Side-door, Thorin and Company imagined whether or not the many things they remembered were still in the mountain, including the necklace of Girion.[1]

After the Battle of Five Armies, after Bard returned the Arkenstone, Dáin II gave him the necklace of Girion as part of his share of the treasure. Afterwards, Bard gifted the five hundred emeralds within the necklace to Thranduil in return for the good and supplies that the Wood-elves had previously given to the Lake-men of Lake-town.[3]

In other versions[]

In an early draft of The Hobbit, the necklace of Girion was originally called the Jem of Girion[4][5] and then the Gem of Girion, which was to be the easily transportable fourteenth share of Bilbo Baggins. However, after Tolkien decided to have Smaug slain by Bard and not Bilbo, the Gem of Girion was replaced by both the Arkenstone of Thráin and the necklace of Girion.[6]

In adaptations[]

The Hobbit films[]

In Peter Jackson's film adaptations, the necklace of Girion is replaced by a necklace made up of the white gems of Lasgalen, which were forged by the Dwarven blacksmiths of Erebor as a gift to the elven queen of the Greenwood the Great. After the queen's death, the responsibility of getting the gems fell to her husband Thranduil.[citation needed]

Upon capturing Thorin and Company, Thranduil alludes to gems in the mountain that he desires and tries to convince Thorin II to give him a share of it. Thorin refuses and is thrown into the King's dungeon.

Later, after entering the mountain, Thorin II finds the very gems that Thranduil craves among Smaug's hoard, gloating about how much an elf lord would pay for it. Thranduil claims the gems of the necklace is an Elven heirloom, but the fate of the necklace is not given.

The Lord of the Rings Online[]

In The Lord of the Rings Online, video game, it is told in an account written by Elves that the Dwarves made a necklace of emeralds and gold for Melian as a token of friendship with Doriath in the Elder Days. It was the counterpart of the Nauglamír. However, after Thingol was murdered by the Dwarves of Nogrod, Melian abandoned the necklace out of disgust. It was then named the Gweriamir ("Jewel of Betrayal"). For thousands of years, it was lost to the Elves, until it was discovered in a troll-hoard by Men. Sometime afterwards, it ended up in Girion's possession, and it became known as the Necklace of Girion. After he gave it to the Dwarves and Thrór wore it at a feast with the Elves while unaware of its history, the Elves were angered. As a result of the necklace being a source of contention, Bard broke the necklace, giving the five hundred emeralds to the Elves and the rest to the Dwarves.[7][8][9]

In the game, players can create two replicas of the Necklace of Girion which are referred to as the Necklace of Emeralds and the Elaborate Necklace of Emeralds.[10][11]
