Herring made illustrations of Barrow-wights, Isengard, and Saruman's wolves that were featured in The 1980 J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar and the calendar following.

Then, after Barbara Remington's work for Ballantine Books, Herring made cover illustrations for publications of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (1983), The Return of the King (1983), The Two Towers (1983), and The Fellowship of the Ring (1983). He also made art for a Ballantine edition of Unfinished Tales, eight years after Christopher Tolkien had finished and released it.
