- "But in time we discovered that he had made a language for those who served him; and he has learned our tongue with ease."
- —Manwë speaking of Melkor to the Eldar[1]
Melkian had been the linguistic phylum of the servants of Melkor as seen in The Lhammas. From this language came the Black Speech, the many dialects of Orkish, and all other tongues of the servants of Morgoth. The other two phyla were Oromëan, from which descended both Elvish and Mannish languages, and Aulëan, the branch of Khuzdûl.[2]
