MacLachlan c. 2001
Mary MacLachlan was a member of Wētā Workshop, serving as Miniature Builder for all three of The Lord of the Rings films (2001 - 2003), a trilogy that required an outstanding supply of miniatures. She and her team designed models based primarily on John Howe and Alan Lee's concept drawings of environments or scenic features.[1]
In Part Four of Michael Pellerin's Extended Edition documentaries about the films, she and others explain the construction and logistics of the sets for Helm's Deep in the filming of The Two Towers.
- "We tend to be very architecturally honest. If our miniature was built to a scale we could walk around it, and it would all look very real - we'd get to the rooms we wanted to get to. Helm's Deep and Rivendell were certainly like that, where the internal structure of rooms and corridors was all logically laid out. Also, the camber has to be correct...right down to the guttering. We even got little braziers and lanterns...all correct at the small scale..."
- —MacLachan in The Art of The Two Towers, Introduction
Through Wētā, MacLachlan was on the crews of Master and Commander (2003) and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) as well.
