The Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. Around one-sixth of New Zealand's population are of Maori descent. Their language is still alive and is official alongside English and New Zealand Sign Language.
Multiple members of the Maori people participated in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, though none played a large role. Among them are Lawrence Makoare, who portrayed Lurtz, Gothmog the lieutenant of Morgul, and the Witch-king of Angmar. Other Maori played some of the Uruk-hai, Orcs, Haradrim, Soldiers of Gondor, and Riders of Rohan.
