Mablung was a Ranger of Ithilien and one of Faramir's most trusted men.
Biography
In the year TA 3019, Mablung and his companion Damrod found Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee in Ithilien, in eastern Gondor. Mablung was tall with dark hair and grey eyes, and wore the green and brown raiment of the Rangers with a hood and mask. He mainly wielded a bow, but had a sword and a knife also.
Mablung fought in the Battle of Osgiliath and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. He survived them, and warned the Men of the West when they marched to the Black Gate of an ambush planned by Mordor. He fought in the Battle of the Morannon, but his fate is untold.[1][2]
Etymology
Mablung was a Sindarin word for 'heavy hand'.[2]
In adaptations
- A character in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was identified as Mablung on a Decipher Card in The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game.[3]
- In The Lord of the Rings Online, Mablung and Damrod are first met in Osgiliath culverts, hiding from the enemy forces above. Having been separated from Faramir, they are unaware of his fate and send the player looking for sings of him throughout the overrun city. While some those hiding eventually make a break for Minas Tirith (the player among them), Mablung and Damrod stay behind along with some other Rangers and spend the siege of the White City hiding under the enemy's feet. After the the Battle of the Pelennor Fields they are finally able to come out and join the Host of the West on the march towards the Black Gate. After tasking the player with searching for the few foes still in hiding within Osgiliath, Mablung and Damrod journey to Henneth Annûn and rejoin yet more Rangers who have been in hiding since the host of Minas Morgul ventured out. Mablung tasks the player with scouting approaches to the Camp of the Host in the Wastes and survives the Battle of the Morannon. After King Elessar charges Steward Faramir with cleansing the evil of Minas Morgul and the Morgul Vale, Mablung with some other Rangers establishes a camp in the pass of Cirith Ungol, where they eventually discover the presence of Shelob.
- Mablung was released as a model by Games Workshop alongside follow ranger Anborn for use in The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game.
