Lord of the Rings is the name of a German-style family board game designed by Reiner Knizia and based on Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The game was published in 2000 by Kosmos and Fantasy Flight Games. It was later re-released in 2010 as a "Silver Line Edition" with slightly different box art and the name updated to "The Lord of the Rings".
The board game is unusual in that it is a cooperative board game - each player plays a hobbit in the party, and the party will succeed or fail as a group to destroy the One Ring, thus winning or losing the game.
The game has three expansions:
- Friends & Foes, with new cards and scenarios.
- Sauron, where one player takes the part of evil.
- Battlefields, adding a fighting board to each scenario.
