The Lord of the Eagles was at one time the leader of the Great Eagles of Middle-earth, the most famous servants of Manwë.[1]
History[]
In the Third Age, the Lord of the Eagles dwelt with his fifteen chieftains at the Great Shelf on the east side of the Misty Mountains. At some point in his life, he was wounded by a poisoned arrow, but survived after the wizard Gandalf the Grey healed him of his arrow-wound. As a result, the Lord of the Eagles held Gandalf in friendship.[1]
In TA 2941, Thorin and Company encountered the Lord of the Eagles and many of his servants when they were rescued by the Eagles from Goblin-town, the lair of the Great Goblin, and spent a night on the Great Shelf.[1]
Later that year, the Eagles appeared many hours into the Battle of Five Armies by the Lonely Mountain, and were crucial in the victory over the Orcs and Wargs.[2] The Lord of the Eagles was proclaimed "King of All Birds" after this, and was given a golden crown while his fifteen chieftains were each given golden collars.[3]
In other versions[]
Speculation[]
It is possible that Gwaihir may have been one of his fifteen chieftains. It is also possible that the Lord of the Eagles was Thorondor.[4]
In adaptations[]
Der kleine Hobbit[]
In the 1980 German radio series adaptation, Friedrich W. Bauschulle voiced the Lord of the Eagles.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North[]
In the 2011 video game, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, Gwaihir appears at Fornost Erain bearing the title "Lord of the Eagles", possibly implying that the developers thought that the character in The Hobbit was Gwaihir himself.[5]
