Lisa Coutras, Ph.D. (now Lisa Coutras Terris) is an American scholar focusing on the interaction of literature with theology and philosophy.
She authored Tolkien's Theology of Beauty: Majesty, Splendor, and Transcendence in Middle-earth, published in 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan, which includes a response to a prevailing stance concerning J.R.R. Tolkien's use of women in the legendarium. She lectured on some of this book's topics at a virtual symposium, Tolkien Among the Theologians, held by Houston Christian University in October, 2022.[1] Tolkien's Theology of Beauty was a nominee for the Mythopoeic Society's 2018 award for Inklings Studies. She will write a chapter of Lexington Books' forthcoming collection, Theology and Tolkien: Constructive Theology.[2]
Coutras appeared on the Amon Sûl podcast in September, 2020, discussing beauty in the legendarium. She returned in April, 2023, to discuss "The Gathering of the Clouds", a chapter of The Hobbit.[3] Eucastastrophe.com has also interviewed Coutras.
In October of 2023, she will co-lecture on “Addiction According to Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings” at the West Virginia Appalachian Addiction & Prescription Drug Abuse Conference in Morgantown, West Virginia.[2]
Coutras received a doctorate in Theology and Religious Studies at King's College London in London, England. She has studied with prominent scholars of Tolkien's friend, C.S. Lewis, such as Alister McGrath and Michael Ward.
