Letter 27 is the twenty-seventh letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien as published in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Summary[]

Tolkien wrote this letter to Houghton Mifflin in response to their request for drawings of Hobbits. Tolkien recommended that such a request be made to "someone who can draw."[1] He refers to his own pictures of Hobbits in the chapters "Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire" and "Inside Information" as improper examples. He says the drawing found in The Last Stage" is a better guide. He continues to describe the appearance of a hobbit, specifying a height of three to three-and-a-half feet tall. He states that Bilbo in the gold-hoard picture was drawn enormously too large. Lastly, he states that Bilbo had acquired boots while in Rivendell, even though such an event does not appear in the final version of the text. His boots were gone by the time he returns to Rivendell on his return journey.
