The Last Debate was a final meeting on March 16 TA 3019 between the Captains of the West in Aragorn's tent on the Pelennor Fields the day after the battle. During the debate Gandalf revealed the quest of Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee to Prince Imrahil and King Éomer and counselled a course of action. It was decided to send a force to challenge Sauron, emptying Gorgoroth and easing the Hobbits path to Mount Doom.[1]
Provision was also made for the continuing defense of Minas Tirith should the desparate gambit fail, with Aragorn revealing that more Men from southern Gondor would soon arrive, leaving the city's garrison stronger than before Sauron's assault began. Consideration was also given to attacking Mordor via the Morgul Pass, but given that the Ring-bearer had passed close by that way it was decided to march on the Black Gate instead.
In taking a decision Imrahil stated that he considered himself bound by the commands of his liege lord Aragorn. Éomer declared that whilst he did not understand the matters being debated he would follow Aragorn regardless. The Sons of Elrond said that they had been sent by their father with the same counsel.
The Army of the West departed Minas Tirith for the Black Gate two days later, on March 18.
