”Kelvar” refers to all earthly living creatures of Arda capable of autonomous movement, such as birds and all other animals. The term is Tolkien Mythology's equivalent to “fauna”.[citation needed]
History[]
Like all living things in Arda, Kelvar were created by Eru Ilúvatar. They were placed under the care of Yavanna by Manwë at the behest of Eru in the earliest days of the world. The Great Eagles of Manwë are considered the highest of all Kelvar, and were inhabited by spirits since around the time of the Awakening of the Elves. This accounted for their sapience.
Etymology[]
Kelvar was a Quenya word that meant 'quick ones'. In the common Elvish tongue, it meant 'animals, living things that move'.
