J. S. Ryan, Ph.D. (born John Sprott Ryan) was Professor Emeritus of Folklore and Heritage at the University of New England in Armidale, Australia, who had studied under J.R.R. Tolkien in his Masters work at the University of Oxford, in the School of English.
He has written at least four published works concerning J.R.R. Tolkien and his mythology, among which is Tolkien's View: Windows into his World, the nineteenth book of the Cormarë Series.
Ryan received an Honorary Doctorate by the American Tolkien Society in 1992.
